It is believed that the original was designed by Coco Chanel, and that Mrs. Kennedy inherited the necklace from her mother, Janet Lee Bouvier Auchincloss. Chanel's design featured irregular spacing between the strands of handmade glass pearls, allowing the lowest string to be pulled up and through the upper strings for a unique, sophisticated look.
