The original Resolute Desk was carved from the timbers of the British Arctic Exploration ship, H.M.S. Resolute, and given to President Rutherford B. Hayes in 1880 by Queen Victoria. It has been in near continuous use in the White House ever since. During his administration, President Franklin D. Roosevelt requested that the desk be fitted with a panel carved with the presidential seal; the panel was meant to conceal his leg braces, however he did not live to see it installed. President John F. Kennedy was the first United States President to use the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office. First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy had it installed there during her historic restoration of the White House in 1961. The Resolute Desk was later made world-famous by a photograph taken in 1963 by Stanley Tretick of President Kennedy working at the desk while his son John Jr. playfully peeked out from behind the central hidden panel.
This reproduction Resolute Desk is an exquisitely detailed replica of the original. The desk has been hand carved from solid, premier plantation grown mahogany. Each pedestal of the desk features two file drawers and two letter drawers behind lockable cupboard doors. Three smaller drawers are beneath the desktop, while the front of the desk features the famous hinged central panel. The top has been covered in maroon hand-tooled genuine leather, embossed around the edges with a gold border. The bottom plinth is painted black, and Queen Victoria's brass dedication plaque faces outward, to match the desk as it appeared during President Kennedy's administration.
The plaque reads, "H.M.S. 'Resolute,' forming part of the expedition sent in search of Sir John Franklin in 1852, was abandoned in Latitude 74º 41' N. Longitude 101º 22' W. on 15th May 1854. She was discovered and extricated in September 1855, in Latitude 67º N. by Captain Buddington of the United States Whaler ‘George Henry’. The ship was purchased, fitted out and sent to England, as a gift to Her Majesty Queen Victoria by the President and People of the United States, as a token of goodwill & friendship. This table was made from her timbers when she was broken up, and is presented by the Queen of Great Britain & Ireland, to the President of the United States, as a memorial of the courtesy and loving kindness which dictated the offer of the gift of the "Resolute'."
The Resolute Desk measures a presidential 6 feet long, 4 feet wide, 31 inches high, and is constructed in three segments to allow for easy installation through any doorway. A stately addition to your home or office!
